  1. It really is an interesting phenomenon.

Back in my Duke days, I studied the emergence of tongues speaking from the 19th century southern Holiness movement, and one of the things I noticed was an interest in a standardized, biblically grounded alternative to the array of supposed signs of the Spirit erupting in Holiness meetings–jumping over chairs, laughing, shouting and so forth.

From an information theory standpoint that makes sense–stronger signal to noise ratio and whatnot–yet once again signal giveth & signal taketh away. Pretty soon you need ways to distinguish among various movements within Pentecostalism. Lo & behold other gifts, such as holy laughter, soon erupt with a vengeance.

Of course, that's admittedly a naturalistic explanation. Maybe God is just easily amused!
